Maine is a special place. Whether it’s the rocky coastline, the countless waterways, or the mountains Maine offers an incredible variety of experiences and that can make planning your first visit surprisingly overwhelming. Here are five things to consider as you begin planning your Maine vacation.
1. Decide What Kind of Maine Vacation You Want
Before you start booking hotels or mapping out driving routes, think about what you actually want to experience. For some, the perfect Maine vacation involves exploring coastal villages, browsing independent bookstores, and watching boats come and go from the harbor. For others, it's all about getting outside: kayaking, spending time at the beach, or discovering a quiet trail in the woods.
As a starting point we recommend identifying three or four experiences that matter most to you. Once you know what you're most excited about, it becomes much easier to decide where to go and how to spend your time.
2. Don't Try to See All of Maine in One Trip
This might be the most important advice we can offer. Maine is a big state, and many of its most popular destinations are farther apart than visitors initially realize. It's tempting to create an itinerary that includes Kennebunkport, Portland, Freeport, Boothbay Harbor, Camden, Rockland, Bar Harbor, and Acadia National Park. After all, if you're coming all the way to Maine, why not see everything?
The problem is that constantly moving between destinations can turn a relaxing vacation into an exhausting road trip. Instead, we recommend choosing a few places that align with your interests and giving yourself enough time to enjoy them. Sometimes the most memorable moments happen when you aren't rushing to the next destination.
3. Don't Overlook Inland Maine
When most people picture a Maine vacation, they imagine rocky coastlines, picturesque lighthouses, lobster rolls, and charming seaside villages. And while Maine's coastline certainly deserves its reputation, there's a lot of beauty and splendor to be found away from the coast as well. Here you'll find mountains, lakes, beautiful hiking trails, and welcoming communities surrounded by some of New England's most spectacular scenery.
Whether you're planning a summer vacation, a fall foliage getaway, or a winter adventure, inland Maine has something special to offer.
4. Build Flexibility Into Your Itinerary
There's a fine line between having a well-planned vacation and having an over-planned vacation. We believe the best itineraries strike a balance.
Some experiences are worth scheduling in advance, particularly during Maine's busy summer months. Popular boat excursions, certain restaurants, and activities with limited availability may require reservations. But having some flexibility and a plan B is a good thing too.
Maine weather can be unpredictable, so if your itinerary is largely outdoor-based it's always worth having a few rainy-day alternatives ready.
Remember, your itinerary should work for you—not the other way around.
5. Remember That the Best Maine Vacation Is Your Maine Vacation
Spend enough time researching Maine vacations online and you'll encounter countless lists of places you absolutely must visit. The best lobster rolls. The most beautiful lighthouses. The perfect coastal road trip. These resources can be helpful, but they don't always account for the most important part of your vacation: you.
A family traveling with young children will have very different priorities from a couple celebrating an anniversary. Someone who loves hiking and camping might prefer an entirely different itinerary from someone who wants great restaurants, art galleries, and beautiful ocean views. And that's exactly how it should be. The goal isn't to recreate someone else's perfect Maine vacation. It's to create one that reflects your interests, your pace, and the experiences you'll enjoy most. That's the idea behind Maine, Planned.
